Long story short: There should be an official cosplay competition at every major and the first prize should be an invitation as a guest at The International 6.
Cosplayers are and were always a big attractions to gaming events. As a cosplayer it’s like working full time for those events, every step is a picture and a chat with someone form the public. The process of creating the costume is long and most of the time expensive. Above the months you spend making the costume and buying and testing all shorts of materials, learning new skills and letting go game hours you also pay for the travel and accommodation like any regular visitor (most of the time you add an extra luggage for the larger costumes).
I feel like all this hard work should be properly rewarded and i think it’s not much to ask from Valve.
To go more deep into this topic i will give an example.
Sand King Cosplay
Estimated cost: 800 euro.
Estimated work hours: 200 h.
Some cosplay costumes are easier to make than other. Some that have a high end quality are super expensive and most of them cost something that it’s not money. They all cost TIME.
- research the hero
- find the appropriate materials
- develop skills: sewing, making patterns, work worbla, sanding everything. drawing and engineering skills
- paint /dry (paint again)
- actual craft time
- fit all together
- styling the wig
- pack everything in a suitcase that and hope you will not find it broken when you arrive (especially if you travel by plane)
All in all i hope Valve will implement this reward and i hope it will motivate more and more people to make Dota2 cosplays and that they are better and better.
As a example look at this awesome Timbersaw cosplay by TanakhT cosplay (give him some love) who won 1st place at ESL One Frankfurt 2015.
